New Rogue: ThinkPoint

by LS Anders on October 25th, 2010 in Rogues, Security Alert.

ThinkPoint is a new version of the fake Microsoft security essential alert rogue anti-spyware.

The installation of this rogue starts with a fake Microsoft Security Essentials Alert.

Followed by a required installation of ThinkPoint.

After the user clicked continue the machine will reboot. Upon startup ThinkPoint will be started and will perform a scan.

ThinkPoint will detect several false infections and requires the user to install the full version to completely fix these. If the user choose to ignore this ThinkPoint will prevent the user from accessing the machine. One simple way to get around this is to open ThinkPoint settings and allow unprotected startup.

Ad-Aware will detect ThinkPoint as Win32.FraudTool.ThinkPoint.
