Profile: Daily Freeware Podcasters

The Web’s open environment for sharing information is the perfect backdrop for an assortment of bad behavior online. But Aaron Dyer, 23, of England, and Billy Hime, 16, of the United States are giving us a reminder of the good that can come from the openness and limitlessness of the Internet.

This duo spreads the word about freeware by hosting their own podcast, the Daily Freeware Podcast, which recently featured a piece on our flagship Ad-Aware software. Read our Q and A with the podcasters.

Tell us about the Daily Freeware Podcast project.
The Daily Freeware Podcast was first posted on February 4, 2008.  We had been panel members on another roundtable podcast…so it seemed like a good idea to do a daily show together.  It's pretty fun. It's amazing how hard it is to keep the shows under 10 minutes.

One of you is based in the U.S. and the other in the UK. Are there any difficulties in co-hosting the show from two separate continents?
A few mix ups with time zone differences and a few Skype hiccups are about it. Nothing that can't be fixed with a good watch and a fast Internet connection.

What’s the best thing about doing podcasts compared to other types of reporting?
It's all about instant conversations with like-minded people, no more softball tech segments for us!  It means we can gain a pretty good audience talking about whatever we want to. The fact that two guys can sit down and use Skype and talk almost daily (FOR FREE) about whatever, is fantastic.

At Lavasoft, our freeware is important to us – it supports our company mission and vision that every computer user has the right to protect their private information. What made you decide to only review freeware?
Freeware is awesome. I mean there really are some great apps out there, problem is finding them and telling more people about it.  People like to get stuff for free, so we figured why not do a daily show on freeware. The great thing about freeware is it allows us to talk about all platforms (Mac,Windows, Linux) Most of our other shows are currently Mac focused.

What led you to feature Ad-Aware 2007 Free in your podcast? Great job on that, by the way!
You're very welcome. Malicious software is a huge problem. It seems like no matter what kind of sites you surf to, users are running the risk of getting bit by something sometime.   Ad-Aware is popular – we both have been running versions of your product for years. Put simply we use it, we trust it, we'll recommend it! Keep up the good work!

“I would like to thank you. I have been using Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware for several years…I have and continue to value your support in not allowing my machine to become a "zombie" that becomes a risk to other computer users within Australia and globally. Along with other security capabilities, it forms an integral part of my personal defenses.”
