Tips and Tactics
Some of the most common methods of malware infection are through exploits of unpatched operating systems (like Windows), web browsers, and software programs. Install updates to your operating system and other applications as soon as they become available to protect yourself from exploits. Some vendors have automated update solutions, while others may notify you by e-mail or on support websites.
Microsoft releases security-related updates monthly, on the second Tuesday of every month. However, updates may be issued outside of the patch cycle if necessary. You can use the Microsoft Update website to download critical security software updates for Windows and other Microsoft programs that you have installed. Make sure that the “Automatic Update” feature is turned on, so that you receive high-priority updates when they are released. You can also sign-up for Microsoft security update alerts so you are notified by instant message or e-mail when an important security update has been released.
Unsure of how to keep your Ad-Aware software current? Ad-Aware 2007’s Web Update feature allows you to receive incremental Definitions File updates, giving you a quick, easy way to stay protected from the latest spyware threats. Web Update also allows Lavasoft to automatically upload any new functions and features that have been used to improve the 2007 version. To update Ad-Aware, choose “Web Update” from Ad-Aware 2007’s main menu, and then click “Update.” If you have Ad-Aware 2007 Plus or Pro, you can use the Scheduler feature to set a personalized schedule for Web Updates.
